The Gloucester High School Band Programs consist of the award-winning Marching Band and multiple highly rated ensembles. They concluded last school year as a Ten-time Virginia Honors Band, receiving all Superior ratings at the VBODA State Marching Assessments in the fall, and the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic bands earned Superior ratings at District VIII Concert Band Assessments in the Spring. Their success led to Gloucester High School being named a VMEA Blue Ribbon School, the highest award given to music programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia, recognizing excellence in Band, Orchestra, and Choral Performance.
Gloucester High School’s Marching Dukes are known for their record of accomplishments over the decades, including recent awards for Best Visual, Best Colorguard, and Best Percussion. They participate in community events like the Guinea Jubilee, the Homecoming parade, and the Christmas Parade. These students also participate in the school ensembles, including Woodwind, Symphonic, and Jazz ensembles, where they are consistently recognized for their high achievement.
Participating in the Gloucester Band Programs allows students wider opportunities, such as nominations for Honors Bands at nearby Universities, selection for district, and even State Honors bands, Governor School, and Tri-M honors society. Students are provided extracurricular opportunities at the high school and in the community, including participation in the pit orchestra for school musicals, Band Day at local universities, university-sponsored honors bands, and pep rally activities.

Concert Bands
Symphonic Band
Symphonic Band focuses on developing and enhancing musical skills. This ensemble performs a variety of selections at both the winter and spring concerts. They perform at state assessments and have repeatedly been awarded straight superiors by the VBODA.
Wind Ensemble
The Wind Ensemble features musicians with more experience, performing an advanced variety of musical compositions. By receiving all superiors from the VBODA, they contributed to Gloucester High School being recognized as a Blue Ribbon School by the VMEA.

Opportunities in Ensembles
Jazz Band
The Jazz Band allows the students an opportunity to experience various styles of jazz, including learning how to improvise. This select band is often featured during the spring concert and has performed for the district assessments.
Pit Orchestra
Gloucester’s Pit Orchestra includes select students and musical instruments and provides the musical accompaniment for the spring musical.
Percussion Ensemble
The Percussion Ensemble is a specialized ensemble that is selectively featured depending on the concert program. It is included in the larger concert bands throughout the year and has contributed to the high ratings of the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band.

The Gloucester High School Marching Dukes are an award-winning marching band known for their quality performance and high ratings in their category at competitions. Featuring both musicians and color guard, they perform at all home games and compete within the region. They have been awarded all superior ratings at state assessments for multiple years, and they’re high ratings have contributed to Gloucester High School’s recognition as a Blue Ribbon School. They are awarded as Best Visual, Best Color Guard, and Best Percussion at multiple competitions throughout their marching season, supporting their strong record of recognition for excellence and precision in marching.

How Do I Learn More About The Program Before My Student Joins?
The Gloucester High School Band Programs offer several opportunities for parents and students to participate in events before joining, including inviting 8th graders from Peasley and Page to join the band in the stands and to join the band in parades. The Gloucester Band Boosters will have information available at rising freshman night at the high school, a special meeting at the end of each school year for 8th grade band students before summer, and the Boosters Board will send members to the spring concert performances to discuss upcoming events and to answer questions. What Is The Band App?
Upon Joining the band program students and their families are instructed to join the band app. This app will allow our Director of Bands to communicate event details, including dates, arrival and departure times, updates for what to expect for rehearsals, and much more. It allows the Boosters Board to communicate important details like fundraising, as well as allows easy communication to the staff.
